Chapter 4
Business as usual: Mexican drug
violence from an economic angle
In this chapter, I will explore the economic perspective on the Mexican drug violence. I will do this from three angles. First, I will discuss how neoliberal policies have affected the Mexican economy and stimulated the growth of the drug industry. I will show that there is a connection between neoliberalism and inequality. However, there is no direct causal relation between poverty, inequality, and crime. Still, economic measures taken in Mexico have produced a class of people that are excluded in the production process and are potential recruits for the drug business. Second, I will compare how the drug industry is organized along the same principles by which successful corporations are functioning, the only difference being that the products and services of the drug industry are illicit. DTOs are ultra-capitalist organizations and it is remarkable how they have to handle similar issues as legitimate corporations such as PR strategy, human resources, diversification, outsourcing, franchising, and corporate social responsibility. I will also discuss how different DTOs have different business models resulting in different income generating strategies. Last, I will take a look at how organized crime, in this case the Mexican drug industry, flourishes in an international, global context. It becomes clear that organized crime is highly flexible and able to exploit advantages of globalization to the fullest while law enforcement agencies actually have a strategic disadvantage.
